| dc.description | Osteomyelitis is a bone infection that can cause inflammation and pain in the affected bone. Its origin is usually related to bacteria with Staphylococcus aureus being the most common microorganism; however, in certain cases mycobacteria or fungi may also be involved. The general objective was to determine the nursing care provided to a patient with vertebral osteomyelitis to improve his quality of life. A qualitative methodology was used with a retrospective review of the medical history, assessment through Marjory Gordon’s functional health patterns and application of the nursing process under the NANDA, NIC, and NOC models. The results showed that the patient presented a clinical picture compatible with vertebral infection, confirmed by tomography findings and a positive culture for Staphylococcus aureus. Identified needs included pain management, immobility, risk of pressure ulcers and emotional support. Proposed Nursing interventions included monitoring vital signs, administering antibiotics, using an anti-decubitus mattress, providing care for a urinary catheter, patient support, and family education. Throughout hospitalization, the patient showed stable clinical progress without signs of neurological complications and remained under monitoring until transfer to a tertiary care unit for specialized surgical management. | |
| dc.description.abstract | La osteomielitis es una infección ósea, que puede provocar inflamación y dolor en el hueso afectado, su origen suele estar relacionado con bacterias siendo staphylococcus aureus el microorganismo más habitual; sin embargo, en ciertos casos también pueden estar involucradas micobacterias u hongos. El objetivo general fue determinar los cuidados de enfermería en un paciente con osteomielitis vertebral para la mejora de su calidad de vida. Se utilizó una metodología cualitativa con revisión retrospectiva de la historia clínica, valoración por patrones funcionales de Marjory Gordon y aplicación del proceso enfermero bajo los modelos NANDA, NIC y NOC. En los resultados se evidenció que el paciente presentó un cuadro clínico compatible con infección vertebral confirmado por hallazgos en tomografía y cultivo positivo para Staphylococcus aureus, se identificaron necesidades como el manejo del dolor, la inmovilidad, el riesgo de úlceras por presión y el apoyo emocional. Las intervenciones de enfermería propuestas incluyeron vigilancia de signos vitales, administración de antibióticos, colocación de colchón antiescaras, cuidados con sonda vesical, acompañamiento al paciente y educación a la familia. A lo largo de su hospitalización, el paciente mostró evolución clínica estable, sin signos de complicación neurológica, y permaneció bajo control hasta su traslado a una unidad de tercer nivel para manejo quirúrgico especializado. | |
